🏳️🌈 In honor of Pride Month, and Pride Week here in San Francsico, and the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots…I present a photo set that I have been sitting on for quite some time. This is without a doubt one of my favorite shoots ever, and one of the favorite models I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.
This is James Kindle. He wears a lot of hats; he’s an educator, a gogo dancer, an activist, and a gorgeous, red-hot redhead…to name only a few.
James and I had an…unusual…introduction. A while back, I photographed the gorgeous and playful Albert Rubio. He too is a gorgeous, San Francisco hunk that I had the pleasure of working with after a chance meeting at a Broadway Bares fundraiser. Shortly after posting the images from our shoot, a friend of mine noticed another man tagged in a photo with Albert on Facebook. F*@cking Facebook…why can’t I quit you. Any way…My friend sent me a link to the photo and told me “you should photograph this guy!” After taking a peek at a few photos I was like…uh, YEAH! I reached out to James to see if it was something that he might be interested in, and to my delight…he was! However, our getting together to take these photos didn’t go as smoothly as hoped. The first time we tried to get together, some race in San Francisco shut down the only road to our shoot location. As devastated, and embarrassed, as I was I knew I wanted to take these photos at said location, so I asked James if he’d be willing to give me a raincheck. And graciously he agreed. When we did get together to shoot, it was almost on a whim! I realized I had a free day coming up quickly and was curious if he was available on this random date. To my delight, he was!
What was so fantastic about James was that fact that from he moment I met him, I felt really connected to him. For those of you that haven’t had a chance to meet James, his warm smile, inviting attitude, and playful vibe can really really make you feel at home. The best part was, James was down for whatever…photographically speaking of course. I had him climbing hills and mountains, laying on cement, squeezing between rocks…and all the while he just gave it his all. I don’t remember being that tired after shooting a single model during my entire career to date.
As it goes—things came up, work came up, life came up. It took me quite a while to actually get to the place where I was able to look at the images. And when I did…I was totally floored. I couldn’t believe how beautiful James looked in the photos. As much as I’d like to take the all of the credit, his personality and hard work on his physique just shined through. Because I was so excited about these photos, it took me a long (long) time to edit them down to the ones that I really loved. This set of James is by far the largest number of photos of a single model from a single shoot that I have ever selected. I truly could only edit them down so far. I felt a big responsibility to get the images right, and it took me some time to do so. But now, here they are. I’ve held onto these images for almost a year now, and I can’t think of a better way for me to share my pride in my work, my pride in the LGBTQ+ community, and my pride in how far this world has come towards fairness and equality.
James has been angelically patient with me during this process. James, thank you so much for your understanding and for trusting me with these images.
If you are inspired by these photos, please take a moment and make a donation to one of these amazing organizations that are working tirelessly to make sure that the LGBTQ+ community continues to expand our equality and representation.
I hope you all enjoy these photos as much as I do.
