ALBERT RUBIO

Sometimes, you’re in the right place at the right time. That’s happened to me a few times in my life…and meeting Albert Rubio is a result of one of those moments. I, along with my buddy Stass, had the pleasure, good fortune and luck to be at the San Francisco performance of Broadways Bares ManuSTRIPt this past Summer. Not only was it an awesome show for an insanely wonderful cause filled with ridiculously talented people…but it placed me squarely in front of Albert. No, really. Because Stass and I are big spenders, we decided to pop for the VIP area right in front of the stage. And for anyone that truly knows me…if I’m not 15 minuets early, I consider myself an hour late…so we ended up being the first attendees tummy-touch distance from the stage. Albert was one of the dancers that was performing before the show started…and boy did he make a tough act to follow. If the folks in the show hadn’t been choreographed and costumed to the 9’s, I’m not sure they would have been able to hold up to the standard he had set on that stage. Because I like to support other artists, I pulled a folding bill out of my wallet…which I hope was at lease a fiver…and, um, placed it into the mechanism Albert was using to collect such offerings of support. It wasn’t my fault that the mechanism was his underwear, and I didn’t want to be rude, so I followed suit. I’ve spend a lot of time in nightlife situations, and I have to say, Albert’s reaction (and subsequent hug and kiss) was one of the sweetest and most genuine I have ever encountered. In that moment, I remember thinking, “I like that guy.” It was showtime. Much to my surprise, Albert was standing right next to us at the front of the stage. The entire audience watched the show as a collection of appreciators and had a BLAST! After the final bows had been delivered, it was time to head up to the VIP section for the after-party. Now that was a good time! Hanging out with the cast, headliner Steve Grand, the entire team at REAF that put the show together, audience members…and once again, Albert! I can be a pretty shy guy and (more often than not) I don’t find my models in real life…it’s usually via the interwebs or some social media outlet. I had been given one too many chances to try to connect with Albert outside of this one night and if I didn’t act I’d have no one to blame but myself…so, with the support of Stass, I pulled out a card, presented it to Albert and asked him if he’d be interesting in posing for me sometime. To my delight, he agreed (with much excitement) to my proposal. I was so relieved. It took some time, but Albert and I finally figured out a where-when scenario and got together to shoot. Albert is truly one of the favorite people I have ever worked with. Because of his theater and dance background, there wasn’t much I had to do in the way of direction. I gave him an idea of what I was looking for, and he was just able to deliver. It was so much fun. He is so kind, silly and handsome. It made for a great afternoon. It has taken me some time to get the photos together, but now that they are ready to share, I can honestly say these are some of my favorite photos I’ve ever made. Thank you, Stass for always being there to be my cheerleader. Thank you Albert for trusting me so much with your image and your willingness to just “go for it” on film. It’s a good reminder…you never know what’s possible if you don’t just ask for what you want. I hope you enjoy these photos…and here’s to an amazing and happy 2018!
